Claude Fable 5.5 release status

What is confirmed and which Claude model to use while you wait.

Claude Fable 5.5 has no confirmed public release date in the official sources we checked as of October 1, 2026. Anthropic's model directory still lists Fable 5.1 as its current Fable model. Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 have launched, but those releases do not establish a Fable 5.5 launch, specification or API route.

If you need to ship a coding agent now, evaluate a documented model against your actual tasks. Waiting makes sense only when your current options fail a requirement you can name; an unconfirmed version number is not a delivery schedule.

Checked October 1, 2026. This is a release-status guide based on Anthropic's public news, model documentation, API release notes and pricing. We did not test Fable 5.5 or make authenticated availability checks. The finding concerns public evidence, not Anthropic's private roadmap. Vendor sources linked here are in English.

What is confirmed about Fable 5.5?

QuestionWhat the checked official sources establish
Has Fable 5.5 officially launched? We could not confirm a public release.
Is there a release date or window? No confirmed date or window was found.
Is there a published API model ID?No Fable 5.5 ID appears in the checked documentation.
What will it cost?No verified Fable 5.5 price is available.
What about context, features and benchmarks? No verified Fable 5.5 specification or result was found.
Which Fable model is documented now?Fable 5.1, with the direct API ID claude-fable-5-1.

This is a dated finding across the official news page and API documentation. It does not establish that a future model will never exist, or that an internal preview cannot exist. It does mean there is no defensible basis here for a launch countdown, price quote or performance comparison involving Fable 5.5.

Why Opus and Sonnet 5.5 do not confirm a Fable launch date

The Claude API release notes record three distinct releases:

  • September 1, 2026: Claude Fable 5.1.
  • September 22, 2026: Claude Opus 5.5.
  • September 28, 2026: Claude Sonnet 5.5.

Those entries describe specific models. They do not announce a shared launch date for every Claude family. Inferring that Fable must receive the same version next, or must launch a fixed number of days later, adds a claim the sources do not make.

The same boundary applies to screenshots and third-party listings: a displayed name is a lead to investigate, not enough to establish the provider, underlying model, official API ID or general availability.

What can you use while waiting?

Start with the models that have a published contract. The following are Anthropic's standard direct API prices in USD per million tokens, checked against its pricing documentation.

Documented modelUncached inputOutputCache read
Claude Fable 5.1$10$50$0.25
Claude Opus 5.5$4$20$0.20
Claude Sonnet 5.5$2$10$0.20

Cache writes, paid tools, taxes, data-residency modifiers and provider-specific charges are separate. These are neither Claude subscription prices nor an OmniaKey quote, and none is a Fable 5.5 price forecast.

Anthropic's model-selection guidance recommends starting with Opus 5.5 for most workloads. It points to Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agent work, including cases where evaluations of Opus 5.5 at higher effort still fall short. That is vendor guidance, not an independent finding that one model wins every task.

For routine work, Sonnet 5.5's lower token rates make it a sensible evaluation candidate if it meets the same acceptance criteria. Compare retries and review time before concluding it is cheaper per completed task. Our Opus 5.5 vs Sonnet 5.5 guide covers that choice; the Fable 5.1 review covers the current Fable contract and migration details.

How to budget without inventing a Fable 5.5 price

Use your current workload as the baseline. For a hypothetical task totaling 100,000 uncached input tokens and 10,000 billed output tokens, with no caching, tools or other charges:

  • Fable 5.1: 0.1 × $10 + 0.01 × $50 = $1.50.
  • Opus 5.5: 0.1 × $4 + 0.01 × $20 = $0.60.
  • Sonnet 5.5: 0.1 × $2 + 0.01 × $10 = $0.30.

These are calculations using equal token totals, not observed task costs. Include all billed output, including thinking where charged, rather than counting only the visible answer. A model that needs another attempt can consume more tokens; a higher-priced model can sometimes avoid expensive human correction. Neither outcome is established by this example.

For an upgrade decision, record total cost of all attempts ÷ number of accepted tasks. Keep failed attempts in the numerator and record elapsed time and human corrections separately. If no task passes, report that failure instead of presenting a cost-per-success figure. This gives a future Fable release a real baseline to beat.

How to verify a real release and API access

Check three different things before changing a production model:

  1. Announcement: find a dated Anthropic announcement or API release entry naming the exact model.
  2. API contract: read its model page, pricing and migration guidance. Confirm the exact ID, limits, supported parameters and billing conditions.
  3. Your access: use the provider and account you intend to deploy with. Anthropic's List Models reference documents GET /v1/models; follow pagination using has_more and after_id before treating an absent result as meaningful. Then validate a small request within your approved test budget.

A successful listing on one account does not establish access for every region, cloud or gateway. Conversely, one account's missing entry cannot prove that a model has not launched anywhere. We did not perform either an authenticated listing or a billable request for this article.

Do not derive claude-fable-5-5 by editing the Fable 5.1 ID and present it as working configuration. Use an ID only after the intended provider documents and exposes it. For OmniaKey, check the current model catalog for the route and its price; this article does not establish Fable 5.5 availability on OmniaKey.

Should you wait or build now?

Build now if a current model already meets your requirements. Keep the model configurable and save a small set of representative tasks with clear acceptance checks. That makes a later comparison possible without designing around an imagined API.

Investigate current alternatives if quality is the blocker. Evaluate Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 on the difficult tasks that actually fail, while considering Sonnet 5.5 for work where it already passes. A release rumor does not repair today's failed workflow.

Revisit the decision when verifiable evidence changes. Once an official Fable announcement, documented API contract and your account access align, compare fresh runs with the same tools, permissions and acceptance checks. Upgrade because it improves accepted results, cost or completion time for your workload.

When Anthropic officially opens a Fable 5.5 API, OmniaKey will verify the exact model ID, pricing, parameters, and account access and prioritize evaluating the route for our catalog. Until then, one OmniaKey account and API key can start with the documented Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, and Sonnet 5.5 routes.
