GPT-6.2 Astra is not out. As of November 2, 2026 (01:09 UTC), OpenAI's API changelog, model catalog and model pages list no gpt-6.2-astra, and OpenAI has announced nothing. The name comes from Codex usage screenshots posted on X on November 1. GPT-6 Astra, released September 3, 2026, is the newest Astra you can call today.

Short answer

  • GPT-6.2 Astra is unreleased, and none of OpenAI's pages lists the model ID.
  • The usage screenshots, "Betelgeuse" and the "Monday" date all come from X posts that OpenAI has not confirmed.
  • Use GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6.1 Terra now, with the model ID in one config value so a switch takes one line.

Is GPT-6.2 Astra out?

No. None of these OpenAI pages listed it when checked between 01:07 and 01:09 UTC on November 2, 2026:

  • The API changelog ends on October 30, 2026 with GPT-6 Rosalind. It has no November 2026 entries and no match for "gpt-6.2", "6.2 astra", "gpt-6.2-astra" or "betelgeuse".
  • The gpt-6.2-astra model page returns HTTP 404, titled "Page not found · OpenAI API"; so does its Markdown version.
  • The models catalog lists gpt-6-astra, gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna, gpt-6.1-sol and gpt-6.1-terra, and no 6.2 model.
  • The Deployment Safety Hub ends at an October 30, 2026 card, "GPT-Rosalind-6 System Card Addendum", with no 6.2 card.
  • The Codex models page lists Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Terra and Luna, and nothing named 6.2.
  • OpenAI's news feed stops at October 30, 2026; the openai/codex releases stop at 0.167.0-alpha.3, published November 1, 2026, 22:30 UTC, and no release note or commit through 23:27 UTC mentions 6.2 or Astra.

There is no GPT-6.2 Astra ID to call, and GPT-6 Astra is the newest Astra.

What the Codex usage logs show

They show the name gpt-6.2-astra in some accounts' Codex usage views while the model picker still said GPT-6 Astra. The earliest screenshot we found was posted at 07:37 UTC on November 1, and four more posts followed by 10:53 UTC:

  • @leo114119, November 1, 2026, 07:37 UTC wrote in Chinese that Codex seemed to be testing GPT-6.2 Astra with a small group: the picker said GPT-6 Astra, while the usage view listed GPT-6.2 Astra.
  • @Mashiro_0619, 07:57 UTC said many users were in that test, and that the image collects three users' official Codex usage analytics.
  • @TokenGremlin, 10:09 UTC wrote: "The model picker still says GPT-6 Astra, but the usage breakdown for some accounts now lists gpt-6.2-astra separately." Kingy AI (November 1, 15:04 UTC) reports that @TokenGremlin later replied "I used his screenshot", so the most-shared image is @Mashiro_0619's, not a new sighting.
  • @Mr_Salio, 10:30 UTC saw the UI show GPT-6 Astra while the API response breakdown showed "gpt-6.2-astra", and read it as a new Astra test.
  • @kimmonismus, 10:53 UTC wrote "Confirmed. GPT-6.2 very close. Expect a release soon." That "Confirmed" comes from the poster; OpenAI has said no such thing.

FourWeekMBA (November 1, 11:44 UTC) read one usage breakdown as gpt-6.2-astra at 19.8% next to gpt-6-astra at 80%. CellCog (November 1) found the 6.2 usage on October 31 in every breakdown it read, at shares from 1.6% of one user's week to 100% of another user's day. Kingy AI (November 1) warned against reading 19.8% as the share of users in a rollout, and OpenAI has made no statement about any of these figures.

Other users saw nothing. TokenPost (November 1, 14:12 UTC) wrote that some users had not seen gpt-6.2-astra in their own records, and PANews (November 1, 14:06 UTC) that OpenAI had made no statement and the model was not in the API. ArtificialWatch wrote that its own codex --model gpt-6.2-astra call at 19:28 UTC returned "400 model_not_found".

Here is what they add up to:

Why 6.2 and not 6.1? On September 28, 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI was scrapping the release of GPT-6.1 Astra over safety concerns. CNBC quoted Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, the same day: the model "didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization, and how it communicates back to the user." OpenAI's changelog and catalog have no GPT-6.1 Astra; the GPT-6.1 models it released are GPT-6.1 Sol (September 29, 2026) and GPT-6.1 Terra (October 26, 2026).

The idea that 6.2 Astra is the fixed 6.1 Astra is a guess OpenAI has not made: @leo114119 asked exactly that, and CellCog (November 1) lists it as speculation.

GPT-6.2 Betelgeuse ("Bel"): same model or not?

No source shows that GPT-6.2 Betelgeuse and gpt-6.2-astra are the same model, and OpenAI has mentioned neither name.

The earliest post with the ID that we found is @gadi_neelesh, October 29, 2026, 22:57 UTC, who wrote that "gpt-6.2-betelgeuse" had appeared in an internal tracker and asked whether it was the long-discussed Bel model; the post has no image and no link. Fifteen minutes later, @mark_k (October 29, 23:12 UTC) wrote that GPT-6.2 is coming soon and is based on the "Bel" model discussed for a while.

IAMag (October 30) traced the tracker entry to a screenshot of a Discord bot called "Internal Tracker", shared by @taker_of_whizz, which logged "gpt-6.2-betelgeuse - INTERNAL" on October 28. IAMag adds that nobody has shown where the bot gets its data.

@Policifyai (October 30, 2026, 20:24 UTC) wrote that GPT-6.2 Bel would release "this week, on the final day of Tibos 28-day shipping spree". The same post put Bel at 72 on Artificial Analysis, citing an unnamed "verified OpenAI insider", and at "12 trillion" parameters. Neither number is confirmed, and on October 31 aiidelist found no Bel result on Artificial Analysis.

The two names travel on separate trails: Betelgeuse through one Discord tracker screenshot dated October 28, Astra through Codex usage views posted on November 1. Kingy AI (November 1) wrote that none of the sources it reviewed shows Bel and gpt-6.2-astra to be one model. @kimmonismus guessed GPT-6.2 was probably that Bel flagship, without tying it to Astra.

When will it launch?

OpenAI has given no date. Every prediction below comes from an X post, and none cites an OpenAI statement.

WhoPostedPredictionWhat happened
@PolicifyaiOct 30, 20:24 UTCGPT-6.2 Bel on day 28 (Nov 1)Day 28 was a banked reset; no model shipped
@kimmonismusNov 1, 10:53 UTC"very close", a release soonOpenAI has confirmed none of it
@pankajkumar_devNov 1, 11:29 UTC"next week"Nothing new at the 01:09 UTC check
@mark_kNov 1, 11:53 UTCEarly this week, "maybe Monday"Monday is Nov 2; still open at 01:09 UTC

On October 4, 2026, OpenAI's Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux wrote on X that for the next 28 days, "each day we'll either ship one thing that is a clear improvement and relevant for most codex/work users or ship a full reset." ship28, an unofficial tracker that says it is not affiliated with OpenAI, counts day 1 as October 5, so day 28 was November 1, 2026, a Sunday. It lists day 27 and day 28 as a "banked reset" with no ship. The event's two new models arrived on day 11 (GPT-Live-1.1, October 15) and day 22 (GPT-6.1 Terra, October 26).

Until OpenAI names a date, the checklist below tells you when it is really out.

What to use now

Pick by job. The rows follow OpenAI's own advice in its Using GPT-6 guide and on the Codex models page.

If you needUse this now
The hardest end-to-end workGPT-6 Astra, gpt-6-astra
Repeated, long-running work where cost mattersGPT-6.1 Sol, gpt-6.1-sol
Everyday writing, visual work, computer useGPT-6.1 Terra, gpt-6.1-terra
A one-line switch on launch dayKeep the model ID in one config value

OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model page lists a 1,050,000-token context window, up to 128,000 output tokens and a knowledge cutoff of April 30, 2026. It runs at five reasoning effort levels: low, medium, high, xhigh and max. It has no none level and does not accept custom temperature or top_p values or log probabilities via logprobs.

All three models are also on OmniaKey's OpenAI-compatible API: see current rates on the GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra model pages. The GPT-6 Astra setup guide covers the Responses API, Python, Node.js and the Codex CLI.

How to tell it's really live

  1. The API changelog names gpt-6.2-astra. GPT-6 Astra got an entry on September 3, 2026, GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29, 2026 and GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26, 2026.
  2. The model page loads. The gpt-6.2-astra model page stops returning 404, and the catalog lists the ID.
  3. Your own key sees it. This OpenAI endpoint lists every model your account can call; look for gpt-6.2-astra there:
    bash
    curl https://api.openai.com/v1/models -H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENAI_API_KEY"

  4. Codex runs it. The Codex models page lists gpt-6.2-astra, and codex -m gpt-6.2-astra runs instead of failing with the "400 model_not_found" ArtificialWatch got on November 1, 2026.
  5. A system card or addendum appears. The Deployment Safety Hub carried a "GPT-6 Astra System Card" on September 3, 2026, and an addendum for each 6.1 model on its launch day.
  6. A usage log line alone proves nothing. The November 1 posts showed the name while the picker still said GPT-6 Astra.

Frequently asked questions

When will GPT-6.2 Astra be released?

OpenAI has announced no date. The dates going around come from X posts that OpenAI has not confirmed: @mark_k wrote "maybe Monday" (November 2, 2026) and @pankajkumar_dev "next week". @Policifyai's November 1 date for GPT-6.2 Bel passed with no release.

What happened to GPT-6.1 Astra?

OpenAI decided not to release it. On September 28, 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI was scrapping the release over safety concerns, and CNBC quoted Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, saying the model "didn't quite meet the bar". OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol the next day.

Is GPT-6.2 Astra the same as GPT-6.2 Betelgeuse?

No source shows that. "gpt-6.2-betelgeuse" comes from a screenshot of a Discord bot's log dated October 28, 2026, and "gpt-6.2-astra" from Codex usage screenshots posted on November 1, 2026. OpenAI has mentioned neither name.

Can I use GPT-6.2 Astra in Codex or the API today?

No. The gpt-6.2-astra model page returned HTTP 404 on November 2, 2026, the models catalog has no 6.2 ID, and ArtificialWatch's codex --model gpt-6.2-astra call returned "400 model_not_found" on November 1, 2026. In the accounts that showed the name, the model picker still said GPT-6 Astra.

Which OpenAI model should I use until GPT-6.2 Astra is out?

Use GPT-6 Astra for the hardest end-to-end work, GPT-6.1 Sol for repeated, long-running work where cost matters, and GPT-6.1 Terra for everyday writing, visual work and computer use. Keep the model ID in one config value so the switch takes one line.
